 director's notes

This scene was initially supposed to come after Cayden found Mr. Rocky Balboa in the bathtub. I really wanted to keep the tone of the rest of the episode kind of dark and dreary and this scene just seemed out of place with the rest. However, I really do love Cecilia's remark at the end of the scene.

 scene one

“What about Chinese?” Cecilia Nakamura questioned as she flipped through the file lying on her desk. She glanced up at Szymon Skubisz, seated at his desk across from her. “I could go for some egg foo yung right about now.”

“We always eat Chinese,” Szymon responded. “Aren’t you tired of it yet?” He inquired as he shook his head and handed her a picture. “Take a look at this one,” he said.

Reaching for the picture, Cecilia nodded. “That’s the perp from the video,” she noted aloud as she set the picture down. “We don’t always eat Chinese,” she added. “We eat other things.”

“We had Chinese three times this week,” Szymon explained. “I’m egg foo’d out.” Reaching for the picture, he held it up and smiled. “Bingo,” he said. “We’ve got a name to go along with this ugly face.”

“One case down, eight million to go,” she sighed. “Then how about Italian?”

Szymon shook his head as he tucked the photo into a folder and set it aside. “I get heart burn,” he said. “We could do sandwiches from that deli down the street.”

“Boring,” Cecilia commented. “Besides, I ate there this afternoon. We have to decide on something. I’m starving here. What are you in the mood for?”

“I don’t know,” Szymon answered. “Something light.”

“Light? Are you on a diet?”

Smiling, Szymon nodded. “I’m watching my girlish figure.”

“If you don’t pick something, I’m going to punch you in your girlish face,” Cecilia teased.

Szymon rolled his eyes and paused for a moment. “Let’s get Chinese,” he finally said. Rolling her eyes, Cecilia reached for the phone on her desk.

“The regular?” She questioned as she glanced at Szymon.

Nodding, Szymon flashed her a smile as his cell phone rang. Reaching for it, he flipped it open and held it to his ear. “This is Skubisz,” he said.

“Cayden?” He said with surprise and caught Cecilia’s glance. “Wait, slow down,” he said as he stood up. “What happened?”

“. . . and two egg rolls,” Cecilia said as she watched Szymon move to the other side of the room.

“What letter?” Szymon questioned. “Cayden. Cayden! I need you to calm down,” Szymon informed him. “Try to relax. No, don’t move him. Don’t touch anything,” he said. “I’ll be there right away. I’m leaving now.” Snapping his phone shut, Szymon glanced over at Cecilia.

“No egg foo young?” She questioned.

“I just got a call about a dead cat,” Szymon explained.

“Gross,” Cecilia responded, then paused. “Oh great! I just ordered Chinese food and you’re talking about dead cats!”
