"Come . . . sit,"
the woman beckoned. "I am Madam Serena. Tell me, what is
it that you seek?" She questioned in a heavy accent as she
waited for Devon to sit. "Madam Serena knows all and tells
all."
"Does this stuff really
work?" Devon questioned as she glanced down at the Tarot
cards on the table and sat across from Madam Serena.
"Of course it works,"
Madam Serena responded, "and especially on a night like
tonight."
"What's so special about
tonight?" Devon questioned.
"It is All Hallows Eve,"
Serena explained, "the one night of the year when the veil
between this world and the next is at its thinnest. We can speak
to the dead and learn the secrets of the future and beyond. Ask
your question. What is it that you would like to know?"
Devon paused for a moment.
"I don't know," she responded. "There are so many
questions that I could ask . . ."
"But there is only one
answer that you are really in search of, isn't there?" Madam
Serena questioned. "One answer that, above all, is pertinent
in your mind, right? You wish to seek the answer to a terrible
ordeal, don't you?"
Devon glanced at Serena curiously.
"How did you know?" She questioned.
"As I have said before,
Madam Serena knows all," the woman responded. "Let
me be honest with you," she said as she dropped her fake
accent. "Most of the people who come to me want to hear
the good things. They want to know if they'll find the man of
the dreams or if they're going to be rich. I take their money,
feed them the bullshit they want, and send them on their way."
"So why are you telling
me this?" Devon questioned.
"Because I can see that
you're different. I may hustle the others, but I do have a gift.
Most people don't really want to know what's going to happen,
they want to hear that everything is going to be fine and that
they are going to live happily ever after. Life isn't a fairy
tale. I think you know that," Serena explained.
"Life sucks," Devon
explained.
"You experienced a terrible
loss," Serena went on, "and now you are looking for
answers to questions that you've been left with. You want to
know why."
"I do," Devon responded.
"And who?" The woman
questioned.
"Exactly."
"The answer you're searching
for isn't easy to come by," Serena explained. "It will
take more than just what the cards tell me. You will need help,"
she explained.
"What do you mean?"
Devon inquired.
"You will need the strength
of others in order to find an answer to your question. There
is a boy who may or may not help you," Serena explained.
"He is stronger than even he believes. He can help you to
find the answer to your question, but beware . . . he will struggle
with this burden."
"How do I know you're
not just lying to me?" Devon questioned.
"You don't," Serena
explained with a shrug. "You just have to have faith, something
that I know . . . and you know that you lack."
"You don't know me,"
Devon said.
"I do know this,"
the woman said, "if you don't find faith, you will never
find the person who killed your friend." |
