So hows Jesse doing?
Cayden questioned as he poured himself a glass of orange juice.
I was so worried about him, I mean . . . the way he ran
out of there. Lifting the glass to his lips, he glanced
over at Devon James.
Devon sighed and shook her
head. Hes better. It took a long time for me and
Kathryn to calm him down but we did it. Hes going to be
fine, Devon assured him.
I hope so, Cayden
sighed as he set his glass on the counter. I just wish
they would have caught the guy who did it, he said as he
felt a slight chill run down his spine. The idea of this
person just walking into my apartment while Im not here
and going through my stuff is kind of scary.
No shit, Devon
agreed. I cant believe they took her diary. I just
wish I knew who it was, Id kill them with my bare hands.
I know the feeling,
Cayden admitted. But I guess one good thing did come from
all of this, he said.
Whats that?
Devon questioned, slightly curious.
Well, they found what
they were looking for, which means that they probably wont
be coming back, he explained, which makes me feel
much safer, he added.
Yeah, but it gets us
no closer to finding the killer, Devon stated.
I know, Cayden
sighed. Am I being selfish because Im relieved?
No, Devon smiled.
Its a good thing that youre not in danger anymore.
The last thing I need is another dead best friend, she
said.
Best friend? Cayden
questioned. I seem to recall that we didnt really
like each other very much when we first met, he teased.
What gave you that idea?
Devon smiled.
Maybe it had something
to do with being locked out of my apartment in my underwear,
he laughed.
Anyone who wears Superman
underwear deserves what he gets, Devon teased.
Screw you, Superman is
the shit, Cayden said as he stepped into the living room.
Whatever, Devon
said as she followed him. So whats on your agenda
for today?
Im looking for
a job, Cayden said with a sigh as he sat on the couch.
My parents are royally screwing me by making me pay my
own way.
Well, at least you had
parents that were prepared to pay all of your expenses for you,
Devon said as she sat down beside him. My parents couldnt
even afford to pay for a bus ticket up here, not that they would
if they could, she added.
Its not fair,
Cayden groaned.
You know, Im only
saying this because youre my best friend, but youre
a goddamned spoiled brat.
Hey! Cayden said
as he reached for a pillow and threw it at her. I am not
a spoiled brat.
You really are,
Devon explained. You lived your whole life depending on
Mommy and Daddy and now you dont have them to lean on.
It sucks, Cayden
sighed. You think theyll change their minds and pay
my bills for me? He smiled.
Such a brat, Devon
laughed.
I know, I cant
help it, Cayden smiled. |
