Interlude - "A Moment of Fear"

Scene One
Cayden's Apartment

"Don’t you dare come anywhere near him," Victoria shouted as she stepped forward to protect Izik Morin from the man with the gun. "He has nothing to do with any of this," she affirmed as she stared the man in the eyes.

"He has a big mouth," the man responded, "and if he doesn’t shut up, then he’s going to be in serious trouble," he explained.

"I will stop him from saying anything," Victoria explained, "but don’t you dare aim that gun at him. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"You know, I’m getting real tired of your mouth," the man responded as he took a step toward Victoria and placed the muzzle of his gun against her forehead. She held her breath.

"Mom," Cayden said, "just don’t say anything . . . Please . . ."

"You should listen to your son," the man said as he removed the gun and stepped away. Victoria could finally breath and her legs seemed to be wobbly and unsteady. Izik Morin reached up and grabbed her by the hand and pulled her down to his side. He glanced across the room at Cayden, and the two locked eyes for a moment. Izik shook his head. He understood perfectly that they couldn’t let anything happen to Victoria.

"You still haven’t told us what you want," Szymon Skubisz explained.

"I just need some time to think," the man responded.

"The longer you take, the more time those officers outside have to strategize against you," Szymon Skubisz explained. "They’re looking for a way in here right now. You have to decide what you’re going to do," he explained.

"Szymon! Are you crazy?" Devon James questioned. "Why are you telling him that? He could kill all of us!" Devon James was tired of sitting on the floor. She needed to get up and move around. She glanced at the man with the gun. "Please, just let us go," she pleaded.

"Are you stupid?" The man questioned. "The street is crawling with police officers," he said as he walked toward the window and looked out. "If I let you go, then I have nothing. They’ll kill me."

"Maybe they won’t," Devon said softly. "Maybe if you let us go, they’ll be easier on you," she explained. The man began to shake his head.

"Devon," Gage Matthews whispered. She glanced at him and saw him shaking his head. "Let’s just give him time to think," he said.

"Time to think?" Devon questioned. "It’s way past time to think," she said angrily. "We’ve had plenty of time to think. It’s time to do something now," she explained.

"I don’t think he’s ready to make a decision right now," Gage explained.

"Oh, he knows what he has to do," Devon responded, "but he refuses to do it anyway." She was getting angrier by the minute as she spoke to Gage.

"Are you talking about him, or are you talking about me?" Gage questioned.

"You had plenty of chances to step up," Devon responded, without missing a beat, "and you passed them all up, and for what? Mommy Dearest? Your mother is a snake and she doesn’t love you. She never will," Devon said as she felt a sharp pain. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

"Devon?" Jesse Martinez questioned. "What’s wrong."

Gage glanced in her direction. "Baby, are you okay."

"Oh my God!" Devon James shrieked. "Oh fuck!"

Gage Matthews scrambled to his feet and ran to Devon’s side. He knelt down beside her and placed him hand on her shoulder. "Look at me, Baby, what is it?" He questioned. "What is it?"

"Holy shit," Devon said as a wave of pain overcame her. She glanced up at Gage and shook her head. "I can’t have my baby here," she said. "I can’t have him here."

Gage Matthews blinked in shock and glanced across the room at the others gathered there. "She’s going into labor," he explained. "We need to get her to the hospital," he said as he pleaded with the man with the gun.

"Stay put," the man ordered, "and shut her up."

Gage glanced around the room with terror. He locked eyes with Szymon Skubisz, who seemed to be the only one in the room that was relatively calm. He had no idea that in just a few short moments, Szymon Skubisz would lose it all.

The look in Szymon’s eyes set him slightly at ease and he crawled around behind Devon James and sat down, pulling her back into his chest. He held her there. "It’s okay, Baby," he said as he took his reassurance from Szymon. "Just breath with me."

"Let us go, you son of a bitch!" Izik Morin shouted.

"Izik, no!" Victoria screamed.

"I told you to keep that little bastard quiet!" The man with the gun said as he walked toward Victoria, aiming the gun at her.

"I’m sorry, I’m sorry!" Victoria said.

"Get up, the both of you! You‘re going to join my little friends in the bedroom," He said as he stood in front of them with the gun. Victoria slowly got up from the floor with Izik at her side. "Come on, move," he said as he pointed to the door.

"Please don’t do this," Victoria said.

"Now!" The man demanded. Victoria jumped and nodded her head. She reached for Izik’s hand and slowly lead him toward the bedroom. "The rest of you better not get any bright ideas. If even one of you is gone, then these two die," he explained as he stepped into the bedroom and pulled the door shut behind him.
