Interlude - "A Lifetime of Sadness"

Scene One
Cayden's Apartment

"I said stand back!" The man said as he held the gun to Cayden's head. "I'm serious. I'll shoot him," he said as they stepped out of the bedroom and into the living, much to the horror of everyone there.

"Oh my God," Victoria King said as she grabbed hold of Izik Morin and stood in front of him when she saw Cayden's frightened face. Her mother instincts had suddenly kicked into full gear. She reached up and placed her hand on her chest. Her heart was beating so fast.

"Okay," Szymon Skubisz said as he put his hands up to show that he was unarmed. "Let's just relax and think about this."

"I talk, you listen," the man with the gun said."Drake is in the bedroom. Bring him out here," he said to Szymon. Szymon's face grew stone cold at the mention of Drake Talbot.

"Please just listen to him," Cayden begged as he pleaded with Szymon.

Szymon glanced into Cayden's eyes and all he could see was fear. He nodded his head as he glanced away from his one-time love. He could never deny Cayden anything. Szymon stepped into the bedroom.

Sebastian Vaughn took a step forward. His face was red on one side where Ryan Clarke had slapped him. He glared at the man with the gun incredulously. "Why are you doing this?" He questioned. "Hasn't there been enough torture and pain?"

"Don't give me a lecture about torture and pain," the man retorted, "not after everything you've done. I mean, after all, this is all your fault."

"I never held a gun to someone's head," Sebastian rejoined. "I never threatened to kill people, and I never actually succeeded in doing so," he noted.

"No," Jesse Martinez said, "you just lied to everyone and me about the most important thing in my life." He stared at Sebastian with brand new eyes, as if seeing him for the first time. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I wanted to," Sebastian explained, "but she was always around. She had you wrapped around her little finger," he said as he motioned to Ryan Clarke.

"Don't blame me," Ryan said, "I wasn't the freak who went around lying to everyone."

"No, you jut lied to me," Jesse said with a glare.

"Hey," the man with the gun said, "solve your problems on your own time. Now I want all of you to sit on the floor," he said as he kicked Cayden to the ground.

Cayden grunted as he fell to his knees and Victoria grabbed him and pulled him toward her. "Why are you doing this?" She asked.

"Ask him," the man said as he pointed to Sebastian, but then he realized that not everyone had listened to his demand. Devon James was still standing. She had a peculiar expression on her face. "I thought I told you to sit down," the man repeated.

"I think my water broke," Devon said nervously. She could feel it trickling down her leg. "Oh my God," she said as she glanced around at the other faces in the room.

"We're having a baby?" Gage questioned with a mixture of fear and excitement.

"We're not having shit!" Devon rejoined. "You stay away from me, you son of a bitch!"

The man with the gun pointed it at Cayden. "You make her sit down," he said. Cayden stared back at him. He had been on this end of a barrel of a gun way to many times. He nodded his head and crawled over to Devon, helping her to the floor.

"Are you crazy?" Sarah Mulberry questioned. "She can't have her baby here. Let her go."

"Yes, pl-please," Elijah Montessori chimed in.

"Don't call me crazy!" The man yelled as he turned the gun on Sarah. She shut her eyes tight with fear. "All of you just need to shut up! You in the bedroom," he shouted as he realized how long Szymon Skubisz was taking. "Get out here!"

Szymon reappeared in the doorway with Drake Talbot. Drake's hands and feet were bound with rope. "There's a woman in here," Szymon said. "She's still breathing, in case you wanted to know."

"I don't care," the man said. "Put Drake on the couch and get on the floor over there," he demanded, opting to keep both Drake and Szymon separate from the others.

"You should. It means that no one is dead. We can still end this without having to come to that." He was scared, not for himself, but for everyone else in the room and especially for Cayden. All he could think about was Cayden.

"Please just stop this," Drake said as Szymon took him to the couch and sat him down and then got down on the floor opposite the couch.

"It's too late," the man responded.

"It's never too late," Szymon assured him.

"Stop trying to get into my head," the man warned as he angrily stepped toward Szymon. "I'll kill everyone here."

"Why don't you shut the help up, Szymon, and stop trying to be everyone's goddamn savior," Sarah Mulberry seethed. "Haven't you made enough of a mess of our lives? You want us to get killed now too?"

"This is crazy," Ryan Clarke said as she shook her eyes. "I don't have anything to do with this," she said as she began to panic. "I don't even know what's going on. What the fuck is going on?" She questioned as she glanced at everyone on the room. "You people are all crazy. There's a man with a gun and you're going on and on about your own goddamned selfish lives."

"Don't you even dare call any of them selfish," Sebastian Vaughn interjected. "You're the most selfish bitch here!" He exclaimed.

"I have to get out of here," Ryan said as she started to get up. "I had nothing to do with this," she said to the man with the gun.

"Ryan, s-sit down," Elijah said as he reached up to try and pull her back to the floor. She pushed him away. She was close to the door.

"He won't shoot me," Ryan said as she maintained eye contact with the gunman. "You don't want to kill anyone, do you?" She said as she took a step back toward the door.

"Stop moving," he man demanded.

"You don't want to kill anyone," she said. "Just let me go."

"I said sit down," he said as he raised his hand and fired the gun. The screams in the room were deafening as everyone scrambled to take cover. Izik tried to get to his feet, but he stumbled and the gunman grabbed him.

"Leave him alone!" Victoria shouted as she tried to grab hold of Izik once again. The assailant kicked her down to the ground.

"Mom!" Cayden shouted as he went to her side to make sure she was okay.

The man with the gun fired another shot. "Anyone moves and he's dead," he said as he held the gun to Izik's head.

"Ryan! Ryan!" Jesse Martinez shouted across the room to where she lay on the ground. He turned back toward the man with the gun. In that moment, regardless of how he felt for Ryan Clarke, he made the decision that if she was dead, then he was going to kill this man or die trying.

"I'm okay," Ryan responded. "I didn't get shot. He missed," she said. She was curled up in a ball beside the door.

The man with the gun pushed Izik to the ground and turned his gun on Ryan. "I won't miss a second time. Get over here."

"Please," she begged.

"Leave her alone," Jesse said.

"Shut up. Get over here," he said. Ryan shakily got up from the floor and hesitantly walked toward the man. There were tears in her eyes as she came to a stop in front of him. "Turn around," he said. "Face them and get on your knees," he demanded. Ryan was frozen in place, unable to move. "Do it!" He shouted, causing her to jump slightly.

Ryan Clarke turned around and faced the other people in the room. She slowly got down on her knees and searched the eyes of everyone there for help. When her eyes came to rest on Jesse Martinez's face, she shook her head. "I'm sorry," she said. "I never wanted any of this. I never wanted to lie to you," she said before she felt something strike the back of her head and everything faded to black.

Devon James watched in horror as the man used his gun to hit Ryan. She saw the woman's body fall forward, knocked unconscious. An incredible wave of pain came over her and she bit down on her lip as it became too much. "Here it cooooooomes!" She cried.

"Please," Sebastian Vaughn begged. "She's having a baby. You have to let us go. Aren't you tired to playing these games? Doesn't it bother you that we just destroyed peoples lives here? Hasn't there been enough pain and sadness to last us a lifetime?"

The man with a gun glanced at Sebastian. "Everything I loved was taken from me," he explained.

"That was your fault," Sebastian explained. "You destroyed it. You consumed it until it was all you could think of and then you killed it. You're a murderer. That's what you are. That's what you'll be for the rest of your life."

"Shut up!" The man screamed as he kicked Ryan's body. "Shut up already or I'll fucking kill her," he cried as he pointed the gun at her.

"You son of a bitch! What is wrong with you?" Jesse Martinez shouted.
